Tips
- Hotels in China register every guest's ID, so foreign visitors should have their passport ready at check-in.
- The deposit (押金) is often taken through a mobile payment or a card pre-authorization and released when you check out. Ask how it works if you're unsure.
- Floors are counted the Chinese way: 一楼 is the ground floor, so 二楼 is one floor up.
- In many hotels you'll find the Wi-Fi details on the key card holder or a card in the room.
- If you need to leave late, ask about 延迟退房 the day before or early in the morning.
Common mistakes
✗ 我想检查进。
✓ 我要办入住。
'Check in' doesn't translate word for word. The term is 入住, and you 办 (handle) it.
✗ 我要离开酒店。
✓ 我要退房。
离开酒店 just means leaving the building. Checking out is 退房, literally 'returning the room'.
✗ 有没有早饭包括?
✓ 含早餐吗?
Put 含 or 包 before the noun: 含早餐吗 or 包早餐吗.
FAQ
What does 押金 mean at a hotel?
押金 (yājīn) is a refundable deposit. You pay or authorize it at check-in, and it's returned at check-out if nothing is damaged or charged to the room.
How do I say 'check out' in Chinese?
Say 退房 (tuìfáng). 我要退房 means 'I'd like to check out', and 几点退房? asks what time check-out is.
Do I need my passport to check in?
Yes. Hotels in China register guests' identification, so international travelers are asked for their passport.
